When the plus size fashion industry gets a bee in it’s bonnet about a ‘thing’ we all prepare ourselves for seeing it flogged to pieces for the next 12 months or more *ahem* cold shoulder *ahem*. This coming season in plus size circles you’re going to be seeing A LOT of shirts and blouses with bows and ties and business at the neck (here are some I really like: Exhibit A,  Exhibit B,  Exhibit C ).

This particular ‘thing’ is one I can get behind as I love a good pussybow! I also love saving money and I knew I had to find a way to make this trend work for me and my wardrobe which is already full of shirts and blouses. And that’s where eBay came in….

Yep, you guessed it, the black ribbon is not part of the shirt. Spurred on by all the bows and ties I’ve been seeing everywhere I bought a huge measure of 2.5″ width black ribbon from eBay to add to my shirts this season. The seller I bought from (linked to below) has a huge variety of widths and colours and 3m is only 99p. For reference, the length used for the bow in these pictures is 1.5m. I just can’t argue with it as a simple, affordable way to update my wardrobe for the coming season and I’ll definitely be buying more; especially in the same colour as some of the shirts I have as I love the effect.

Some notes about the shirt: I’m really feeling the obnoxious print and the generous length. It’s listed as ‘longline’ but that can often come up way too short for me (I’m 5’10”). I had a pleasant surprise when I tried this one on, it’s an ideal length to wear over jeans or leggings like this. I love how the print is confined to the bib and down the arms, it’s a piece you can wear casually or formally and if I had an office job I’d be wearing this to the office with tailored trousers too.

There are no buttons up the front so it fastens at the nape of the neck with a short zip. The material is 100% polyester and is quite thin, which is lovely for warmer days, but it is a little bit see through so light undergarments are required. Despite it being polyester it feels lovely and soft. I sized up and I’m glad I did as the fit is spot on, I wear a UK20 and this is a UK22. If you have hips/belly/boobs then I would recommend sizing up once in AX Paris Curve items in general.

On to the rest of the outfit and the jeans, these are the high waisted Rosie style from Simply Be and they are incredible. Remember when I said I was completely done with jeans? Well, scratch all that because these ones are excellent. I love high waisted skinny styles and the Rosie is exactly right. I went for this blue acid wash pair and will be heading back to get more in the other colourway too.

These jeans are currently in the sale for £10 and are selling fast, one word of advice though: size down. The ones I am wearing here are a size UK18 and there is still plenty of stretch in them, I might have gotten a UK16 if my calves were not as large.

There you have it: a cool and casual transitional outfit all tied together with one simple, bargain tip to update your AW16 wardrobe: a length of ribbon for less than a quid!
