When I first started looking for ways to feel love for my body I rejected ‘flattering’ clothes completely and maxi dresses were amongst the first things I stopped wearing. To me they represented years of hiding my body in the summer under a voluminous maxi and a cardigan; I wanted to never even look at one again.
Now I’m at a point where I’m feeling much more content with my body, I find I’m wearing my maxis again and every summer I’m falling in love with them a little bit more. So with my outfit of the day I’d like to show some love for the mighty maxi dress, a plus size babe’s summer saviour.
This kind of slinky, stretchy maxi dress is my absolute favourite thing to wear during the (very) short lived British heatwaves that we have. The material is supportive enough that I don’t feel like I have to wear a bra and long enough that I don’t have to wear pants either. For BBQ’s, beer gardens and sunbathing in the park a maxi dress is an absolute godsend.
This dress in particular is a result of shopping my own wardrobe, I bought it nearly a decade ago and I found it lurking around at the back of my closet completely neglected. It’s originally from Therapy, a brand sold in House of Fraser, and when I checked the label it said it was a size UK16 so I didn’t hold out much hope of it fitting at all. However, as you can see, it fits like a dream with no upwards pull in the material; it’s still floor length on me. That’s some kind of magic right there, and another argument in favour of always trying things on as most labelled sizing is complete garbage.
For this look, initially I attempted an ombre lip from bright lilac to hot pink and it didn’t go too well. The two colours ended up combining but made this really lovely shade so I’m not completely disappointed with the results. A word of advice though, never let the NYX Lip Suede dry if you get it on your teeth as it will never come off….
…so yeah, that is lipstick on my teeth in the second image, but I’m letting it fly because I love the photo (and would have no idea where to start with editing it out!) Now, if only we can get some more of those sunny days up here in Dundee so I can wear this lovely peacock maxi again!
