Every so often I’ll take the bull by the horns and visit the high street for a browse, even though I know most retailers in Dundee don’t stock plus sizes, I still enjoy the physical experience of shopping and mooching about looking for inspiration. I popped into Dorothy Perkins, because I’m loving their aesthetic this season, and my heart nearly stopped when I saw this gorgeous number.
I decided to try it on in a UK20 (their main range does go up to a UK22) and after it won a poll over on my Twitter by a fair margin, I knew I’d found my perfect autumn print!
I love the length of this dress, I’m 5’10” and it sits like a true midi dress should: mid calf. There is a slight bell sleeve going on and the arms are so close to being long enough that I didn’t find myself tugging at them all the time. The material is lovely and light which makes the skirt floaty in the best way, it’s perfect for layering this season, plus it’s really soft and silky to the touch.
There is no stretch in this dress at all, which my boobs bore the brunt of here. I had to go braless and I did feel slightly squashed across the chest, but when I sized up the fit everywhere else was just too big for me. If you are between sizes or over an E cup I would recommend sizing up as the waist is v.v.high; it’s almost empire line so that, teamed with the lack of stretch, leaves little room for larger busts.
It fastens with a zip up the back then two buttons at the nape of the neck, leaving a small keyhole detail at the back which I really like. I also really love the black and white detail at the neckline, a small nod to the athleisure trend which I think compliments the print really well. It was mild enough to go bare legged so I wore my trusty New Look boots with a pair of my boyfriends pink socks from M&S because they match my lipstick!
Again, I kept my makeup simple, the change in the weather is wreaking havoc with my skin right now so I’m trying to be as kind to it as possible. I did find another excuse to wear a more summery shade of lip colour though, and I layered a small amount of clear lip balm over the top to help counteract how drying it can be.
Last but not least, I wore my Missguided Plus pleather jacket with the big fluffy collar. I love how it balanced out the hyper feminine print of the dress, I’m on my second year with this jacket and I’m yet to find something it can’t be worn with. It’s an absolute autumn staple for me.
I love this autumn outfit, and I’m still amazed that I was able to walk into a shop on the high street in Dundee and actually find something for me. I know things are not good enough for plus size shoppers on the high street just now in a lot of towns and cities across the UK, but while we’re working on making change happen, if you find yourself in a situation where you’re not able to wait for an online order or you need something asap, it’s always worth trying things on because very often the label means nothing!
