…And Now For Something Completely Different

At the beginning of the year I made myself a promise, I promised that I’d try and think outside of the box a little when it comes to how I dress in 2018. You’ll know I pretty much never wear trousers and I don’t get my bare legs out very often either. That’s why I’ve been really excited to share this week’s looks with you, because both outfits are something a bit different for me and I picked some pieces to style that are wayyyy outside my comfort zone, what can I say… I love a challenge!

PLT+ PrettyLittleThing Kimono Dress Striped Co Ord

When I heard that the lovely people at PrettyLittleThing were looking for bloggers to put together some race day / formal event inspired outfits I jumped (no pun intended) at the chance. I’ve been keen to try some pieces from the new PLT+ range and I adore their latest California-style, super colourful ‘the sweet life’ product shots as they’re the perfect antidote to this dreary February weather.

Seriously though – it’s so dreary up here in the wilds of Dundee at the moment – I’ve done my level best to brighten and lighten these photos up but it’s felt like it’s been permanently dusk up here lately. ROLL ON SPRING!

PLT+ Grey Dress Neon Clutch

For the first look I chose this beautiful kimono midi dress* in a cool ice grey and paired it with some matching silver block heeled sandals*. The neon bag, which is a long time veteran of this blog, was a last minute addition but I really love how it works with the metallic tones of the rest of the look.

This outfit is something completely different for me because I’m usually not comfortable with going bare legged above the knee, but the split at the front of the dress ensures my knees are front and centre, and very much visible. This ‘rule’ about dressing my body is one that I had drummed into me for years, and one that I’m hoping to leave behind me in 2017. Whilst this is only a small baby-step, I’m happy I made it.

PrettyLittleThing PLT+ Ice Grey Kimono Midi Dress

Fit & Style:

This kimono dress is so easy to wear, it’s made of a slinky and slightly textured material which feels really nice on. The sleeves and top half of the dress are cut generously to be extra floaty, and it has a knotted detail at the front just below a very deep v neckline. This dress isn’t quite midi length, as it cuts off just below the knee, and the slit at the front is pretty high – but these front slits are very often a feature of this style of dress and make it easier to walk in.

The silver heels are also from PrettyLittleThing, and even though they aren’t ‘wide fit’ they accommodate my E width feet really well making for a comfortable fit. I love the block heel, it gives that bit extra in the stability stakes that I really need – I feel like I’d take a serious tumble if I tried to mooch about in stilettos these days!

PrettyLittleThing Plus Size Range Striped Co Ord

So, here I am staying true to my new year’s resolution to wear more smart trousers with this second outfit which features a – frankly gorgeous – striped co-ord set made up of a wrap topand wide leg trousers*. I have such a thing for co-ords, and I hate that they have a tendency to stop at a size 16 whenever I come across them; so I was incredibly happy to see that PrettyLittleThing have loads of co-ords in their PLT+ range!

I shy away from wearing trousers 100% of the time so this look is genuinely something completely different for me too. I was particularly wary of wide legged ones, as I felt like they’d make me look like I was ‘hiding’ behind them. This pair, however, are impossible to hide in – the colours, the print, the style – I feel like I chose a good pair to help me change my mind.

PrettyLittleThing PLT+ Striped Wide Leg Trousers and Wrap Top

Fit & Style:

The trousers are a versatile high waisted cut and a very decent length too. I was worried that they might float around my ankles, but with a little adjustment at the waist they’re perfect. I did struggle with the wrap top somewhat as I felt like my boobs were a bit too big for it, that in turn pulled the waist up at the front. However, wearing it with a top layered underneath or as it is but without a bra, should fix that particular issue.

I have to say that my first encounter with PrettyLittleThing has been really positive. And although both looks are a little different to my normal style, they’ve helped me in my quest to get outside of my comfort zone and dump some of the old rules of dressing that I weirdly still stick to.

Overall, the sizing is really great, I went for my usual size in everything, they’re decent quality for the price point, and the designs are fun. I can definitely see me wearing the dress a lot when the weather warms up a bit and I’m really looking forward to styling the wide leg trousers with flats and the wrap top with a roll neck for a more casual look.
