I Simplified My Skincare Routine And I’m So Relieved

As recently as last year my skincare routine was absolutely wild, crammed with step after step of lotions and potions that I’d meticulously researched. I had everything covered, and had spent considerable time and energy on targeting my dehydrated skin, it’s fungal acne, and it’s wrinkles. It was indulgent. It took ages. I loved it.

I know that there is a lot of writing out there in favour of fancy skincare routines, and just recently there’s been the obligatory backlash. I’m not here for any of that, I live in the ‘let people enjoy things’ part of the internet. However when I was particularly ill earlier this year I started to become overwhelmed by all my skincare, in fact most of the time I couldn’t be arsed with my routine at all, and as a result my skin started to suffer.

So in order to keep my face happy I decided to figure out what I could get rid of and still have relatively nice skin. Firstly by finding any overlap in products, where I was using more than one thing to do essentially the same job, and then by admitting defeat with ingredients I kept trying to include but that my skin just didn’t like or respond to. Finally I set a tighter budget; I reduced the percentage of my disposable income I spent on products so I could divert that cash to other things.

Six months on from refining the products I use and I can’t tell you how relieved I am to not have to keep on top of this old routine any more. It wasn’t bad by any means, I put a lot of work into it and there are some solid recommendations in there if you are after something a bit more complex. But for me in my life right now, simple is where it is at, here’s what I’m currently doing.

NB: I also use Pixi Glow Peel Pads [affiliate link] once every couple of weeks, on a Sunday evening, for around 5 minutes before washing it off. I’m working up to 15 minutes weekly. Plus, I’ll occasionally chuck on a sheet mask if I have any.

The new routine takes me down from regularly using 15+ products to a mere 9, and of those 9 products only the Timeless Coenzyme Q10 serum is expensive (£24.99), the rest are under a tenner. Whilst I’m always budget conscious, reducing the amount I spend on skincare overall has been a great help for chipping away at my debts.

I love my simplified skincare routine just as much as I used to love the complicated one, but this suits my lifestyle much more. I didn’t expect to feel such a profound sense of relief when I dropped the longer list of products, I thought I’d miss the daily ritual of it a little more. But I have noticed an improvement in my skin just because I’ve been able to keep up with it, and I guess in skincare – as with most things – consistency is key.
