Affordable Beauty Roundup 1 September

After some lovely feedback about my last make up review post, I’m really happy to bring you another! This is the start of what I hope will be an ongoing affordable beauty series where I’ll be collecting together all my monthly favourites into one roundup post. This also ensures I will have been using a product for at least a full month before I recommend it to you for the month ahead. So, without further ado, lets get on with Affordable Beauty Roundup #1 for September: Makeup Revolution, Rimmel & Milani.

Affordable Beauty Roundup 2

[I’ll just pop in my usual caveat at the start that I’m not a beauty blogger, there are some incredible artists out there who have otherworldly application skills but I’m not one of them! I’m a fashion blogger who has rediscovered her love for make up and blogs reviews using her front facing iPhone camera. The recommendations I will be making in these roundups are things I genuinely use and love.]

I have five products to talk about today that I have been wearing regularly lately; Kate Moss for Rimmel Lasting Finish Lipstick in Rosetto no.48, Makeup Revolution Vivid Baked Highlighter in Rose Gold Lights*, Makeup Revolution Strobe Highlighter in Radiant Lights*, Milani Baked Blush in Luminoso no.05 & Makeup Revolution Redemption Eyeshadow Palette Iconic 3*.

In the swatch below right: first is the Rimmel Lipstick, second the Makeup Revolution Vivid Highlighter, then the Strobe Highlighter and finally the Milani Luminoso.

Affordable Beauty Roundup Swatches

One of the very first things I noticed when I swatched these products is that the Makeup Revolution Vivid Highlighter is virtually identical to the Milani Luminoso Baked Blush. I’d say it’s a pretty good dupe, with a very similar peachy / orange colour pay off and gold shimmer. The Makeup Revolution is very slightly less pigmented than the Milani, but both blend very well for the price. I wore both in these pictures and I usually blend it way more than this so it’s probably a little too much for my pale skin here, but I love it and I can see this being absolutely beautiful on medium to dark skin tones. The Milani Luminoso retails for £7.95 and the Makeup Revolution Vivid Highlighter retails for £3.

The Makeup Revolution Iconic 3 palette is widely regarded as a great dupe for the Naked 3 palette, and when you look at side by side swatches you can see why. I haven’t settled on my favourite combination of the shades, and still try a different three every time, but I’m yet to screw it up as I tend to keep it subtle and if I make a mistake the formula lets me blend it into oblivion! As with most of Makeup Revolution’s palettes the Iconic 3 is easy to use and blend, but with some excess fallout on the darker shades. The longevity isn’t a patch on Urban Decay… but for a tiny £4 compared to Naked 3’s £38.50, that’s a compromise I’m happy to make.

Affordable Beauty Roundup

I absolutely love the Makeup Revolution Strobe Highlighter, it’s unbelievably effective for the price and it’s easily my favourite recommendation of the month. The swatch on my arm doesn’t do it justice, it gives a lovely pearly tone without too much in the way of obvious specks of glitter or shimmer. I’m aware it’s supposed to be used differently as it’s a ‘strobing’ product, but I’ve been using it as any other highlighter and enjoyed the effect very much. It can also be used wet for an intense, going out look, but I haven’t tried this as I never go anywhere tbh. It’s more along the lines of the Mary Lou Manizer than most budget highlighters and for £3, this is a bit of a find and one I will repurchase.

Lastly, I want to talk about a product from that utterly classic collaboration: Kate Moss for Rimmel. I was turned on to the Nude lasting finish lipstick a good few years ago by a pal and when I wanted a cheap and cheerful dark neutral brown last year I picked up another in Rosetto. It’s a lovely creamy formula with great pigmentation and whilst it won’t last all day without touch ups it at least has the decency to fade nicely rather than leaving the lipliner look behind.

I really hope you found this useful and were able to see past the iPhone quality pictures! If there’s anything in particular you’d like to see me try out in upcoming roundups or have any recommendations then please do get in touch, I’m all ears.
