Here we are in July already, I can’t quite believe it! As well as being the halfway point for the year, July 1st also marks the third year of the CF Trust’s Wear Yellow Day and it’s your chance to get involved by posting your yelfie! Wear Yellow Day was started to raise money and awareness for people with cystic fibrosis, so if you’d like to get involved then please wear something yellow, share your yelfie using #cfyelfie on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram and then challenge your friends and family to do the same.
If you are able to make a donation too then please text Yellow to 70500 to donate £5 or visit the website for other amounts / other ways to help. I’ll be sharing my #cfyelfie on my social media channels this afternoon and I’d love it if you could do the same!
The Cystic Fibrosis Trust is a cause which is very much close to my heart as my lovely, sweet as a button boyfriend lives with it. Cystic fibrosis (or CF) is an inherited condition which is caused by a faulty gene that controls the movement of salt and water in and out of the cells. This means that mucus gathers in the lungs and digestive system causing a huge range of life-limiting symptoms.
Although the CF Trust is campaigning for awareness and financing research into the condition, there is currently no cure. However, there are a number treatments that can manage it somewhat, including twice daily intensive physio sessions, a huge amount of daily medication and the intake of a large number of calories every day to maintain weight.
Whilst you cannot develop or ‘catch’ CF, more than 2.5 million people in the UK carry the faulty gene (around one in 25 of us) and most people will not know they carry the gene until they have children. Each week five babies are born with cystic fibrosis, and two people die.
When my boyfriend was born, the life expectancy for a person with cystic fibrosis was 14 years old. He is now 30. These days the outlook is more positive though, and more than half of the cystic fibrosis population in the UK will live past 41. This is in no small part due to the improvements in treatments financed by charities like the CF Trust and EU funding. This improvement in care and treatments means that a baby born today with CF is expected to live even longer. But there is still so much work to do.
I’m aware the juxtaposition of such a serious message and appeal alongside a couple of yellow outfit pictures may feel flippant to some, but I’m really proud to be able to get involved with Wear Yellow Day and help to raise money. I will happily donate my £5 and post my yelfie! The important part is this: the CF Trust is trying to raise funds for research into finding a cure for CF, and it feels like one is ever closer, as they put it: “We believe that the day when people with CF can live a life unlimited by their condition is within our reach.”
How to donate: Text Yellow to 70500 to donate £5 to the CF Trust, to help find a cure and to give people with Cystic Fibrosis a fighting chance.
So, without further ado, here’s my official #cfyelfie for 2016! I’m looking forward to seeing some of yours too 🙂
