I feel like enough time has elapsed since I vowed to never ever again wear a dress over jeans for me to completely change my mind on the subject. To me, it is such a throwback; layering a dress over jeans was everywhere in the late 90’s and early 00’s. I wasn’t sure about it back then and now it’s here again I’m still not sure about it, but it’s out there currently to be seen on the fashion world’s brightest and best… it even appeared in Vogue at the end of last year (and in the infinitely cooler Teen Vogue a little earlier than that).
In the interests of my usual ‘yeah okay, but is this going to work on a plus size body?’ research I’m channeling some serious early 00’s Sugababes vibes for you today and tackling the trend head on.
I have had this beautiful cobalt blue velvet dress* by Pink Clove in my wardrobe for a little while, just waiting for the perfect opportunity to wear. The same day that Pink Clove very kindly asked me to pick some pieces for them to send over, the impeccably stylish Nancy of Sugar, Darling? featured this strappy ‘Kendra’ dress in an outfit post and that made one of my choices for me instantly… I knew I had to make it mine 💙
For layering up, I initially tried out a couple of different styles of jeans to find a look I felt comfortable with. As this dress is made of heavy, textured velvet I felt that the slim leg skinnies worked best. If you’re layering pieces made of lighter materials, such as shirt dresses and tulle dresses, I reckon you could give some relaxed or ‘boyfriend’ fit denim a go for a really chic look! As usual, I turned my skinnies up once for a more pronounced ankle grazer effect and I love how it looks with the cut out blue heels.
As we’re racing through March into (hopefully) warmer weather, I’m making sure I get a few last wears out of one of my favourite winter jackets; this leopard print faux fur number. I threw it on as we left the house and omg it took this look so hard into the late 80’s but I LOVE IT. I think the idea of layering dresses over jeans in terms of the current trend is to come out with a more sleek and contemporary daytime look, but that isn’t really me, and this girl about town in ’87 ensemble is way more my style!
Before I go, a few quick thoughts about this divine dress: as with most of Pink Clove’s items I found the fit to be pretty spot on, even a little on the generous side. I’m wearing a UK20 and it is very comfortable with some room to spare, if you are between sizes it might be worth sizing down. The sweetheart neckline is absolutely my favourite feature of this dress, closely followed by the rich cobalt blue which is made all the more vibrant by the velvet fabric.
Whilst there are currently only limited sizes available of this dress (fingers crossed for a restock soon), Pink Clove’s ‘new in’ section is looking really strong just now; I currently have my eye on this red leopard print dress and this gingham number too. If it’s the colour you love, then I have linked to some pieces of a similar shade in the ‘Shop the Look’ section below.
