Scarf Print: My SS18 Highlight

Can you feel it… the spring in the air yet..?

I feel like I say this every year, but in this seemingly endless winter the longer days can’t come round soon enough. I’ve been out of action for most of March, riding out a full on flare brought on by the unseasonable (and unreasonable) cold. I’ve spent a whole lot of time in bed browsing around online with general vagueness, but one thing I did notice was a riot of colourful scarf print fashion week photos coming up in my Pinterest feed.

After a bit of light digging, it turns out that the late 80’s / early 90’s baroque scarf print realness is from the SS18 collections of the likes of D&G and Versace (ofc), which reminded me of a skirt I have in a really similar style – so out it came for this quick and easy look that I grabbed some snaps of on my phone.

First of all, I just want to clarify that what I’m calling scarf print here probably has a completely different fashion name that I’m not privy to; something like Miami print or chain print I guess. For the purposes of this post I’m going to keep referring to it as scarf print, and if you’re reading this and know what the official term is then by all means let me know.

The skirt I’m wearing was originally a sleeveless dress that I picked up last year from one of my ultimate bargain websites: Everything 5 Pounds. I instantly fell in love with the throwback print, but when the dress actually arrived I found that the torso was way too short and tight for me, so I chopped it in half to make it wearable as a skirt.

MINI DIY ALERT: When I say chopped it in half, that’s literally all I did! The waist was elasticated so I just cut across the dress about an inch above the elastication; when worn with a belt you really can’t tell it’s been cut… or at least I like to think you can’t tell.

I’m honestly not sure how I would style a good 50% of my outfits if I didn’t own a load of these trusty black roll necks! As I didn’t have a contrasting / clashing print blouse that worked, I decided to keep the rest of the outfit plain to let the skirt do all the talking. A black roll neck, pair of opaques and comfortable wide fit flats made this into an outfit that I could (and did) wear all day with no worries.

As trench coats are still big news this year, and it’s still not warm enough to venture out without a jacket, I chucked on this light spring-weight navy mac. Even though it’s a very definite blue colour rather than a darker more neutral navy, I haven’t found that it has clashed badly with anything I’ve wanted to wear it with yet.

Whilst we are here on a scarf trip I’m also very much into putting scarves up in my hair right now, mainly tied around a ponytail or messy bun. I have so many scarves that I never wear any more, so I’m going to make 2018 the summer of scarves to make the most out of my collection. Plus, I think it looks kinda cute so…

I’m so excited about this very small part of 2018 fashion, it reminds me very much of being a kid. I’m still not 100% used to fashion from my youth being revived and reinvented, but scarf print is an absolute highlight this year so I intend to get my wear out of it!
